History of the Oktoberfest

History of the Oktoberfest

The original Oktoberfest, also known as the Beer Festival, is one of the historical and cultural celebrations of the German people that takes place in the Bavarian city of Munich, and is currently considered the largest popular festival in the world.

The festival has been held annually between September and October since its beginnings in 1810, when the marriage of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Altenburg was celebrated and the citizens of the city were invited to attend.

The festivities lasted several days on the Theresienwiese, also known as the Wiesn, an open field right next to the Munich city wall.

Therefore, after the success of the first Oktoberfest, it was decided to continue celebrating the festival and in 1910, the 100th anniversary of the Oktoberfest, 12,000 hectolitres of beer were served.

Nowadays, during the three weeks of the Oktoberfest in Munich, more than 7,500,000 litres of beer are consumed and about 6,000,000 people from all over the world attend the Oktoberfest.
